"Born in New York in 1963, Richard
Lithgow began private art lessons at the age of fourteen with famed art
instructor Roberta Shavel, who has been instrumental in shaping the career of a
generation of accomplished East Coast artists. After study at Cornell
University's prestigious art department (to which he was awarded a competitive
scholarship), Lithgow continued his studies at the Art Student's League in New
York City, with emphasis on life drawing and print making. During the
1980's his awards included recognition in the form of a scholarship from the
famed Salmagundi Club of New York City. The artist has done numerous
commissions for private collectors, as well as work hanging in Ireland's
Guinness Brewery collection. His characters are strong, and each of his
paintings invites the viewer to enter his own private world and make their own
interpretations. The artist's experiences in New York and particularly
stories about the "Hell's Kitchen" area, have greatly influenced his subject
matter."
