"Charlotte Bixby Yep was born in San Jose, California on August 12th, 1958. She has always been interested in art, and can’t remember a time when she wasn’t drawing or painting, or working on a creative project. Schooling provided her with the opportunity to study the basics in art; she took as many art electives as she could, constantly building her skills and experimenting with various mediums. She eventually studied art at San Jose State University from 1976- 1981. She worked with oils, acrylics, silkscreens, pastels, and charcoals, but was drawn to watercolors as her medium of choice.
An appreciation for the arts has always been apparent in Charlotte’s entire family. Her great-grandfather was talented at woodcarving, and her great-aunt created magnificent oil paintings, and was also a talented musician and composer. Charlotte’s parents are also involved in music — both are singers. Her two sisters have studied art and music as well.Charlotte herself studied the piano for 12 years, but decided to concentrate her efforts on her true passion: painting.
Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Michelangelo, Raphael, Canoletto, and French Art Nouveau great, Alphonse Mucha. But it was Georgia O’Keefe who inspired her to paint large, over scale flowers in great detail. Her love of animals led her to paint animals and wildlife as well. And most recently, she has turned to capturing the actions — the raw energy — of athletes. The effects of light and shade on her subjects bring each and every one of her paintings to life. Every detail is vital to the final masterpiece, creating a photographic realism from the medium.
A 30 minute
documentary "Charlotte Bixby Yep: Painter of Life" aired recently on PBS,
highlighting Charlotte's career. Her work is represented in homes and
collections throughout the country, including Nordstrom department stores,
Kaiser Permanente Medical Facilities, Siri Bros Carnation Nurseries, and the
Johnson Rose Nurseries. "
